Physical Descriptions: giant, squid, "giant sea monster," non-magical
(at least, does not know how to cast spells)
Relatives/Friends: seen being tickled by the Weasley twins and Lee Jordan,
known to have rescued Colin Creevy from the lake, known to have had dealings with
the merpeople (who draw pictures of him) - possibly considered a prey animal by
them, however.
Important Events:
- Book 1, Ch. 16 - The Weasley twins and Lee Jordan were tickling the
tentacles of a giant squid, which was basking in the warm shallows.
- Book 2, Pg. 231 - "Could've been anything," said Ron. "Maybe he got
thirty O.WL.s or saved a teacher from the giant squid. Maybe he murdered Myrtle;
that would've done everyone a favor .....
- Book 3, Ch. 16 - Harry's euphoria at finally winning the Quidditch Cup
lasted at least a week. Even the weather seemed to be celebrating; as June
approached, the days became cloudless and sultry, and all anybody felt like doing
was strolling onto the grounds and flopping down on the grass with several pints
of iced pumpkin juice, perhaps playing a casual game of Gobstones or watching the
giant squid propel itself dreamily across the surface of the lake.
- Book 4, Ch. 12 - "Colin, I fell in!" he said shrilly, throwing himself
into an empty seat. "It was brilliant! And something in the water grabbed me and
pushed me back in the boat!"
"Cool!" said Colin, just as excitedly. "It was probably the giant squid, Dennis!"
"Wow!" said Dennis, as though nobody in their wildest dreams could hope for more
than being thrown into a storm-tossed, fathoms-deep lake, and pushed out of it
again by a giant sea monster.
- Book 4, Ch. 24 - "He's mad!" said Harry, staring at Krums dark head as
it bobbed out into the middle of the lake. "It must be freezing, it's January!"
"It's a lot colder where he comes from," said Hermione. "I suppose it feels quite
warm to him."
"Yeah, but there's still the giant squid," said Ron. He didn't sound anxious - if
anything, he sounded hopeful. Hermione noticed his tone of voice and frowned.
- Book 4, Ch. 25 - "Underwater ..." Harry said slowly. "Myrtle . . . what
lives in the lake, apart from the giant squid?"
- Book 4, Ch. 26 - Small fish flickered past him like silver darts. Once
or twice he thought he saw something larger moving ahead of him, but when he got
nearer, he discovered it to be nothing but a large, blackened log, or a dense
clump of weed. There was no sign of any of the other champions, merpeople, Ron -
nor, thankfully, the giant squid.
- Book 4, Ch. 26 - Harry swam faster and soon saw a large rock emerge out
of the muddy water ahead. It had paintings of merpeople on it; they were carrying
spears and chasing what looked like the giant squid. Harry swam on past the rock,
following the mersong.
- Book 4, Ch. 26 - Only bubbles flew out of his mouth, but he had the
distinct impression that the mermen had understood him, because they suddenly
stopped laughing. Their yellowish eyes were fixed upon Harry's wand, and they
looked scared. There might be a lot more of them than there were of him, but
Harry could tell, by the looks on their faces, that they knew no more magic than
the giant squid did.
